Benson had his first trip to the ER about two weeks ago. He had been sick the two weeks prior to his visit to the ER and had been taking Penicillin for a severe sinus infection. I thought the penicillin worked great. After about 3 days Benson was feeling great, his congestion was gone, his runny nose was gone, the circles under his eyes were gone, he was feeling really good.
However, two days after his penicillin ended he started getting sick again with a runny nose, itchy eyes, fever and just plain not feeling good. Then one night he started breaking out in a rash, hives and huge bumps all over his body. This all came on in a span of amount 10 minutes. I was freaking out and my Mom suggested we take in him to get checked out.
After waiting for almost 1.5 in the ER waiting room and another 30 minutes once we got back into the room the doctor said it wasn't anything to worry about. He thought Benson probably had a viral infection and a viral rash, which is common in babies. So, after a few wasted hours and I'm sure a lot of money (I haven't gotten the bill yet but I'm sure I don't want to see it) we were sent home with "It should go away within a few days. Nothing to worry about. See his pediatrician in a few days just to check up on it."
Well, his rash got extremely worse over night so I decided to take him to see his pediatrician. Well of course our doctors office sucks and is always super busy so we couldn't see his normal doctor but got squeezed in at 4:00 p.m. with another doctor whose name I still don't know. After waiting for over 1.5 hours in the waiting room we were told the doctor we were going to see was 1.5 hours behind schedule and it would probably be another 30-45 minutes before we could see him. Hello! Shouldn't they tell you that when you check in? I guess none of the receptionists have had children so they don't know what it is like to entertain a sick, 16 month old baby for 2 hours, in a doctor's office waiting room. Needless to say I was furious!
We finally got to see the doctor, who was very nice, he took one look at Benson and said "This is not a viral rash. I don't know why the ER doctor told you that." What! He said, "This is clearly not a viral rash given the severity of the rash, the raised bumps and color. This is some type of allergic reaction rash." So, I guess a few hours in an ER waiting room and a few hundred dollars gets you NOTHING!
It turns out the Benson is most likely allergic to penicillin. The doctor suggested that we probably don't give Benson penicillin ever again. He said there really wasn't anything to do to help the rash. Because it was an allergic reaction to an antibiotic he didn't want to give Benson another antibiotic to treat it. He said it would take a few days, probably close to a week for the rash to go away. So, we left the office with a very tired, very cranky, 16 month old baby who looked like he had leprosy. Luckily the rash did go away in a few days and Benson hasn't really been sick since then.
